Air conditioning pipework tucked away, neatly out of sight

Air conditioning should make your home more comfortable, not uglier. Rein and Peter come from the building trade. They look at where the pipework can go out of sight, and what you'll still see of it afterwards.

Absolute aanrader!

HOW THE PIPEWORK RUNS

Where the pipework can run

Inside and out, Rein and Peter look for the route where you'll see the least of the pipework. Here are five of them.

  • A black wall unit on a white wall, with no pipe in view.
    Inside

    Straight through the wall

If the indoor unit hangs on an outside wall, the pipework can go straight out behind it. Inside, all you see then is the indoor unit.

  • Peter opens the grille of an indoor unit concealed in a boxed-in section of the ceiling.
    Inside

    Boxed in

If the indoor unit or the pipework is boxed in, all you see of the air conditioning is the grille.

  • Peter, on a step, adjusts the grille of an air conditioner at the top of a wooden built-in cupboard.
    Inside

    In a cupboard

If the indoor unit sits in a made-to-measure cupboard, all you see of the air conditioning is the grille at the top.

    Let Rein take a look
  • An outdoor unit on a flat roof next to a dark tiled roof, with a white duct along the roof edge.
    Outside

    In trunking along the facade

If the pipework can't run indoors, it goes outside in trunking along the facade.

    Let Rein take a look
  • Rein works by the window in a red tiled wall; the white pipe runs to the outdoor unit in front.
    Roof

    Through the sloping roof

If the indoor unit hangs under a sloping roof, the pipework can go out through an opening in the roof.

OUTSIDE

Where the pipework goes

Inside, you see the indoor unit. Outside, you want to see as little of it as possible. This is what that looks like with an outdoor unit on a flat roof.

Outdoor unit on a flat roof

An outdoor unit on a flat roof between two windows, with the lines in two grey ducts along the brick wall.
  1. Opening

This is where the pipes go through the facade into the building.

Rein and Peter make the opening through the wall or roof themselves.

  2. Trunking

The pipes run in two lengths of trunking along the facade, not loose across the wall.

If the pipework can't run indoors, Rein and Peter lay it in trunking.

  3. Outdoor unit

The outdoor unit stands on feet on the flat roof, between two windows.

Rein chooses the spot together with you: on the ground, on the wall or on the roof.

Where can your outdoor unit go?

On noise, the neighbours and the owners' association (VvE), with the rules that apply.

FROM THE BUILDING TRADE

From renovations to air conditioning

Before they started Airco Holland, Rein and Peter ran a building company together. For years they did renovations, working with architects.

You can see that in the way they install air conditioning. They don't just look at where the indoor unit goes, but also at how the pipework gets outside and what you'll see of it afterwards.

We make the wall opening and lay the pipework, do a pressure test with nitrogen and pull a vacuum on the system. Then we commission it and check it. We explain how the controls work, and we fit an installation label with the correct installation details. For us, the pressure test is a really important step: we put the pipework under pressure with nitrogen to check that it is leak-tight, before any refrigerant goes in. We also record the details on the installation label in our own records.

What we do around the installation

  • The opening through the wall or roof
  • A route for the pipework, out of sight where possible
  • An explanation of what you'll still see, when Rein comes to take a look

We don't do renovations. We do the work around the air conditioning.

QUESTIONS

What people ask about the pipework

Question not answered here? Ask Fris, or call us on weekdays.

Can the pipework always be hidden?

No, not always. It depends on where the indoor unit goes, where the outdoor unit can stand and what is in between. Rein tells you honestly what you'll still see.

Will anything have to be broken open?

Sometimes an opening is needed through a wall or the roof, or the pipework goes into boxing or a cupboard. What needs opening up in your home and how it gets closed again, you'll hear during the visit. It isn't a renovation.

What does it cost to hide the pipework?

That's part of the installation. During the visit, Rein looks at which route works in your home, and after that your price is fixed. Read the full answer

Do I need a permit for the outdoor unit?

On the ground, up to 1 metre high and 2 square metres, you don't need a permit. On the roof or on the facade, your municipality's environment plan (omgevingsplan) decides, and on or against a listed building you always need a permit, according to the Informatiepunt Leefomgeving, the government's information point on these rules. You can read more about listed buildings on Listed and historic buildings. Read the full answer

I live in an apartment. Is it possible there too?

That mainly depends on where the outdoor unit can go. For that, you usually need permission from the owners' association (VvE). You arrange that yourself. Rein tells you where the outdoor unit can go and how the pipework runs, so you know what to ask. Read the full answer

Can Rein take a look remotely first?

Yes. When you call, ask about the free virtual visit.
